All is not peaceful in the Crowe household.
It is the result of a visit to a neighbor’s house where I saw a stray cat that had showed up one day.
The neighbor mentioned that he was going to have to make it disappear.
Since we have been without a barn cat for a while due to an overzealous Springer, I took the cat home.
It was friendly but could hold its own with the dogs and was soon named “Caleel” by the kids.
It also became apparent that the cat was in a family way so we let it into the house to birth in a relatively safe place.
From the start Caleel did not develop a good relationship with Stormy, our resident gray calico.
The two spent an inordinate amount of time a few feet apart growling at each other.
Caleel would attack Stormy if possible, however Stormy knew all the hiding places and could disappear for a day at a time.
She could sense when Caleel was sent outside to give her some peace and then would come out to be coddled.
Caleel birthed only one kitten that was named “Tiger.” He was much doted over by my three little girls but soon 3-year-old Valeri thought it necessary to take Tiger outside with a predictable result – the Springer killed it.
This necessitated mother finding a burial box and holding a funeral when Alyssa and Katelyn came home from school.
At present, Caleel can come into the house until she starts a fight at which point she is unceremoniously sent outside, airborne if necessary to avoid her sharp claws.
Hopefully the two will come to an understanding, but it is not looking good.
Maybe a cold winter will settle her down a little.
I don’t know if a cold winter will settle down the current disputes between the presidential contenders.
This race seems to be particularly vicious, particularly on the Democratic side.
Thugs have attacked Bush-Cheney offices in more than one state.
Several recent incidents make me wonder about the sanity of some Kerry supporters.
For example, this from an article by Michelle Malkin in Townhall.com (and other publications) dated Oct.
13, 2004: In Gainesville, Fla., police arrested a Democrat accused of punching the chairman of the Alachua County Republican Executive Committee in the face at the town Republican headquarters.
The accused, David McCally, is a community college instructor whose specialty is social and behavioral sciences.
According to the GOP chairman, Travis Horn, McCally hurled obscenities at him before the assault.
“He proceeded to say how he had a Ph.D., and he was smarter than me.
I’m a stupid Republican.”
Small wonder that everyone attending a Bush event is screened.
Good behavior must be optional for Kerry supporters.
It is also very revealing that when Sinclair Broadcasting scheduled a showing of Stolen Honor: Wounds that never Heal, a documentary about the damage Kerry’s anti-war activities did to the POWs, the Kerry campaign started a major campaign with the FCC to censor the program.
John Kerry was invited to appear in this documentary, but he refused.
This censorship attempt has thankfully been rebuffed by the FCC.
For years I have watched the major networks regularly produce “documentaries” that could pass as thinly-disguised Democratic National Commercials.
Dan Rather’s attempt to damage George Bush with forged documents falls in this genre.
It was very interesting to read the leaked Mark Halperin memo giving instructions to the “journalists” at ABC to slant the news in favor of John Kerry.
This gives foundation to something that was always suspected.
Thankfully there are other sources of information for news.
Debate stuff I don’t usually watch presidential debates.
I usually know what is going to be said and I’ve always got plenty else to do even if it is nothing.
I watched most of the debates this year.
I think John Kerry has mastered the mechanics of debating and appears to have a great memory for details, either that or he can make the stuff up pretty fast.
His comment about Missouri having the third largest force in Iraq was pretty effective.
Unless George Bush had studied it he wouldn’t know, making it very difficult to counter.
Perhaps this is the reason many people think Kerry acts “presidential.”
Unfortunately for him, Kerry made two major gaffes in the debates that will outlive any cute zingers he may have uttered.
The first was the “Global Test” remark and the second was in the last debate when he referred to Mary Cheney, Dick Cheney’s daughter when asked a question about homosexuality.
It is like inviting an acquaintance over for an evening and discussing many things but at some point he kicks your dog.
You probably won’t remember anything except that.
In both cases, Kerry’s campaign has had to do plenty of damage control even with the efforts of a slavish press.
This along with John Edwards’ promise that paralyzed people will get out of their wheelchairs if Kerry is elected president show that these two are severely lacking in the credentials department.
The bottom line is, I want someone who is presidential, not someone who just “looks presidential.” George Bush satisfies this criterion, he has done what he thought necessary to protect and serve this country under difficult circumstances.
Looking back at the last 12 presidents, the argument could be made that most didn’t look particularly presidential, but W joins the list of several that have performed admirably under difficult circumstances: Bush 43, Bush 41, Reagan, JFK, Harry Truman, FDR.
Counterpoint I’d like to thank Dave Strand for the kind remarks about my family and to commend him for 45 years of marriage.
I didn’t agree with Paul Wellstone about many things, but always respected the fact that he and Sheila had a strong marriage.
In that respect, Dave and Paul are great examples to all of us.
It is interesting to see Dave lobby to invade Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Normally we don't invade countries that are cooperating with us.
I’m disappointed that Dave appears to have something to hide if he cannot let us know exactly when the information was gathered that says the U.S.
ranks last in everything in regards to children.
It is disturbing to see Kerry and Strand constantly advocate the destruction of the major drug companies that have produced so many helpful drugs for Americans and the rest of the world.
They must not care for the children of the workers of these companies.
I find this extremely hypocritical.
I’ll join Dave in saying that regardless of how you intend to vote, please go to the polls on Nov.
2 and vote.
If that is not possible, contact the Aitkin County Auditor at 927-7354 to find out when the Auditor’s Office is open for absentee voting.
