By KATHLEEN PAKARINEN
New season ticket and single event prices for school activities and athletic events were established by Aitkin School Board members at their meeting on July 19. Approved were increases of $10 for season tickets and $1 for single event tickets in each category.
Next year, season tickets will cost $40 for students, $50 for senior citizens (age 65 and older), $60 for adults and $85 for families. Single event prices next year will be $4 for students, $5 for senior citizens and $6 for adults.
A season ticket is good for all school-sponsored athletic events, held in Aitkin, and for hockey games at the Hallett Center. A family season ticket permits parents and their children, including pre-school children, to attend all events covered by the policy. Events covered by the policy include all athletic events (except baseball, tennis and track), school plays and musicals.
There is no admission charge for some athletic events, concerts and speech activities and there may be an admission charge for dances or other events, sponsored by student groups. Passes that are honored at athletic events include: bus and school patrol passes, state coaches association passes and worker's passes. Cheerleaders in uniform and pep band members in uniform, performing at the event, will also be admitted free of admission.
Also approved by the board was an increase in fees for student participation in extra-curricular fees. For students in grades 9-12, the fee was raised to $100 per sport. The fee will be $55 per sport for students in grades 7 and 8. For non-sport activities, the fee will be $55 per activity for all students. There will no longer be any family cap for fees but, Activities Director Dan Stifter said a process is available for families experiencing a financial hardship. Grant funding is in place to cover the costs of fees that may be waived, Stifter explained.
Food service
Superintendent Bernie Novak reported that a salary agreement has been reached with food service employees that represents a 2.48 percent increase over three years that are covered by the agreement. Novak said the increase was the same as the one given to custodial workers.
Business Manager Tiffany Gustin reported that bids for commodities came in lower than anticipated and food service revenues were higher than budgeted. Therefore, Gustin said, the administration is recommending that milk, breakfast and lunch prices remain the same as last year. For a half-pint of milk - 35 cents for students and adults; for breakfast - $1.25 for elementary students, $1.35 for high school, $2.30 for adults; for lunch - $1.80 for elementary, $2.05 for high school and $3.35 for adults.
Staff changes
The board accepted resignations from bus driver, Charles Carlson; head baseball coach, Kevin Hoffman and second grade teacher, Julie Hunter.
Three bus drivers were hired, including: Kerry Boyer for route 16, Les Hyovalti for route 12 and Rick Niesen for route 17.
Student teachers
The board approved the hiring of two student teachers who will work in the schools next year at no cost to the district.
Kayla Hinkemeyer from Bemidji State University will work in Robert Williams' third grade class at Rippleside Elementary. Alecia Bodway from UMD will work with the math department at the high school and be the ninth grade volleyball coach.
Spring coaches
Spring head coaching assignments were approved that included: Mark Mehr, softball; Michael Statz, boys' golf; Greg Steinke, girls' golf; Steve Jacobson, boys' track; Adam Carlson, boys' track and Cindy and Joe Walz and Lindsey Kaiser (one-third each), boys' tennis.
